Three Artistic Activities That Can Help Improve Your Mental Health

Working with art supplies and creating your own works of art can be a form of meditation and release. Here are three examples of artistic activities that can be used to improve your mood and disposition.

Sketching the Outdoors

Fresh air and the sounds, sights and smells of nature can help settle your nerves. Take your sketchpad and colored pencils to a park or nature reserve. Look at a tree (for example) and focus on the detail of the bark, branches, and leaves. Find a comfortable place to sit and begin to draw and color. Your concentration and focus may cause you to lose track of time and place, which provides similar benefits as meditation.

Use Your Imagination

Drawing from your imagination can also provide benefits that are similar to meditation, including improved focus, sleep, and mood while reducing anxiety and pain.

Coloring

Color Swell offers free coloring pages of animals, people, and places. Use crayons, markers, and colored pencils (from Color Swell) to dive into the detail with the colors of your choice and reap the health benefits.
